I am extremely grateful and honoured that the people of the Forest of Dean have once again elected me to be the Member of Parliament for our area for the fourth time. It has been a huge pleasure and privilege to serve as your MP for the last 12 years, and I am delighted that you have once again shown faith in me to represent you in Parliament. I will continue to serve all my constituents to the best of my ability, whoever they voted for.
Last Thursday, I received my highest ever share of the vote with 54% of voters supporting me, on an increased turnout as well. On a disappointing night for the Conservatives nationally, I was pleased to see my vote share increase, and I will repay your trust and continue to work hard on your behalf by supporting local businesses in delivering good jobs and campaigning for better local health services.
I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and all of the election staff who worked tirelessly last week at polling stations and at the count in Cinderford, as well as everyone who helped on my campaign.
Now that the dust is beginning to settle on the election results, what the country needs is certainty. Having secured more than 42% of the vote nationally, and the greatest number of seats, Theresa May will now form a Government and ensure that we will deliver Brexit. The new Government will also work to keep our nation safe and secure, following the horrific terrorist attacks in Manchester and London in the last few weeks.
Parliament and its MPs will now return to our work for the people of our country, and I will continue to visit local schools, hold constituency surgeries and stand up for the Forest in Parliament. I am also now able to carry out casework again, so if you have a problem which I can help with, please get in touch at mark.harper.mp@parliament.uk.
Thank you once again for your support at this election.
