In yesterday’s statement by the Rt Hon David Davis MP, Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, I spoke about the need to ensure that the clear will of the British people – as expressed in the EU referendum - is implemented, and that we leave the European Union.
There were no caveats or conditions on the ballot paper. The choice for the British people was clear – to Remain in the EU or to Leave it. I backed the Remain campaign, but as a democrat, I fully respect the will of the British people.
It is clear to me that if there is a vote in Parliament on triggering Article 50, MPs across all parties and on both sides of the referendum campaign should respect the public’s wishes and support it, without playing political games.
