Yesterday, the Defence Secretary announced a range of measures to consolidate our Defence Estate, to bring it in line with the requirements of our armed forces in the 21st century. As part of these changes, it was announced that one of the sites that will be closed is Beachley Barracks.
The site is planned to close in 2027 – with military personnel moved to a new site, to be confirmed.
Ultimately, it is right that these decisions are made based upon defence needs, but is obviously disappointing for those of us that have worked closely with our local battalion, and ensured that they have been made welcome in the Forest of Dean.
I will work with Ministers to ensure a smooth transition, both for our service personnel in 1 RIFLES, and the surrounding community who support both the soldiers and their families.
